Five
hundred miles northwest of Recife lies Fortaleza, capital of the
State of Ceará. It is a large, modern city where bold,
new architecture contrasts with beautiful beaches and tall coconut
palms. On the beaches, visitors can see typical "jangadeiros"
(fishermen) who take to the sea in their rugged "jangadas"
(crude sailing rafts traditionally used for fishing in the region).
The jangadeiro's daily struggle against the wind and waves is
one of the most fascinating adventures in the northeast.

SUGGESTED
PROGRAM
Beach Park
The best theme park of the Northeast, maybe of Brazil. Close to
Fortaleza, right by the beach incredibly well-equipped. Kids will
love it. |
Canoa Quebrada
|
Originally
a fishermen's village, used to be a refuge for hippies
around 30 years ago. Capitalism took control later on
and nowadays Canoa is sort of a safe place with reasonable
infrastructure. The beaches are stunning. To have a buggy
is really a plus, but since driving a buggy requires special
abilities, it's much better to hire a driver. You won't
regret spending a few bucks on a ride.

Cumbuco
|
|
Cumbuco
Beach has two main attractions: beautiful sand dunes and
the Lagoa da Banana (Banana Lagoon). As it's very near from
Fortaleza you can go and return in the same day.
|
|
Jericoacoara
|
Probably
the most famous beach in Ceara. It's rather far from Fortaleza,
the Capital, so to go and return on the same day is something
you do not want to do.

Morro
Branco
|
|
Another
place of stunning beauty. Its main attraction, the Sand
Canyon, is really an extraordinary place. Praia das Fontes
(Fountains Beach), another well-known beach, is very near
too and deserves a visit.
